Research Interests

My primary research interest is in studying the chemical compositions of laboratory-generated secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and ambient organic aerosol by using novel analytical techniques, such as electrospray ionization coupled to tandem and high-resolution mass spectrometry. By characterizing the chemical components found in laboratory-generated SOA we can begin to better understand those SOA formation mechanisms applicable to ambient organic aerosol formation. Our chemical composition work, in collaboration with many others, including the laboratories of the EPA and of Magda Claeys, has begun to uncover particle-phase reactions relevant to ambient organic aerosol formation. In particular, we have identified organosulfate formation in SOA generated from the oxidation of several biogenic volatile organic compounds in the presence of acidified sulfate seed aerosol; thus, providing the first available chemical tracers for ambient SOA formation under acidic conditions. Additionally, much of my chemical composition work has been primarily focused on SOA formation from isoprene; the most abundant non-methane hydrocarbon emitted that was previously thought not to contribute to SOA formation.
